The ‘Terrible Place’, Modern Dinotopia

On the day when the city of Sauropolis was officially created a storm
· blew several ships into the reef near the entrance to dolphin bay. The dolphins, showing remarkable spirit and kindliness, helped bring the survivors to shore. On seeing this great marble city, still small and built mainly on Egyptian design, with Brachiosaurs and Apatosaurus towering above its roofs and the few raptors that had stayed in the civilized portion of the island darting through the streets, one of the survivors exclaimed ‘Sauropolis’, e.g. ‘City of lizards’ and the name stuck. That same roman helped design many of the buildings in Sauropolis and later one of his comrades, who had been shipwrecked further along and lived in the jungle before being found and rescued over 15 months later coined the name ‘Dinotopia’, eg ‘terrible place’ from he hardships he had suffered away from civilized Dinotopia
 Though it was universally agreed
· that Sauropolis was to be the new capital of Dinotopia, the Baz based saurians and humans wished to construct a city that was dedicated to art and science and the pursuit of wisdom and knowledge. Thus in 21AD Waterfall City was founded along with Pooktook and Treetown to be the regional capitals of Dinotopia.
· The skybax core, founded for the Chandaran empire as airborne warriors and scouts by Gideon Altair, set up their base of operations in Canyon City and became the Messengers and highly trained fast response personnel of the island, discipline was highly stressed in the majority of training and the ‘sky core’, as it was nicknamed, were the first to modify the greeting of ‘breathe deep, seek peace to the ‘fliers’ variant of breathe deep, Fly high. Eventually, as the custom of human-saurian bonding was adapted in the habitat partners was created, this adaptation became one of three major ones. Breathe deep, run fast for land based partners and ‘Breathe deep, Dive Below for the dolphins and their kin.
The codes of Dinotopia were attached to the great pyramid in the newly
· founded waterfall city in the year AD26
Between then and the mid 1800’s
· Dinotopia enjoyed a golden age and many significant scientific and creative breakthroughs were made
In the late 1800’s Arthur and William Denison
· arrived on the island, the first ‘Dolphinbacks’ for 40 years. In the following years William managed to get up to an uncommonly large amount of trouble, outwitting pirates and searching for the lost ‘Hand of Dinotopia’, the sea route which the city of brass used to enter and exit the seas around the island
· During the world wars, the HMS Indomitable was sunk only 30 kilometers from the island, and many soldiers drowned. A few, though, were rescued by the dolphins including Saura Groeben, the later chief healer of the island
 In the late
· 1990’s a light aircraft crashed into the sea three miles out from the razor reef. This event sparked the greatest period of turmoil and change known on Dinotopia for millennia with the destruction of Volcaneum and several other small cities in its vicinity. The perpetrators were later Skybax master David and healer Karl Scott.
As the new millennium began Volcaneum began to be
· rebuilt and Waterfall City went through major repairs. Also, a new city was created down the coast from Prosperine and is still under construction and will be named when it is completed. Sunstones have become more common and are once more being used, albeit less widely than before they were sealed beneath the ground

During the rebuilding of Volcaneum sunstones played a major part in providing a temporary smithy while the permanent volcanic smithies were being rebuilt. Also the heroic actions of Karl and David brought back a small cache of sunstones which are now being used, albeit cautiously as many Dinotopian still view sunstones as capable of doing great harm if misused. Myth of sunstones has flourished through the ages and every storyteller on the island has at least one tale concerning the great stones from space. Even some core Dinotopian beliefs are based around the rocks. Where sunstones will take the island in the future I cannot say, but I hazard that without them Dinotopia never would have been.

‘the sunstone has many properties hereto undiscovered in the regions outside of the island. It is my belief therefore that the sunstones are a direct result from the asteroid that crashed into the island at the dawn of time, either being present in the asteroid or created by the extreme forces released upon impact. The stone seems to have an innate property to store solar radiation, how it does so however is a mystery to me. The science of geology is not my field of expertise. Maybe the esteemed sages of the island will be able to give me more information on this remarkable mineral’
