Holiday of the Sacred Wells

    by Snipe

There are a dozen or so
that stand apart as different
unique

On this day
the whole of The Island
takes a pilgrimage
to the closest of these sacred wells
carrying with them
as many empty vessels as possible

A great meal is shared
and much speculation
is made based on recorded
dates of their particular well

Once a year
on this day
at sunset
one
and only one of the sacred wells
erupts as a geyser-
the problem is
each year it's a different well

This year
it's the Raz Nutok well
near Pootook
the locals dance the thundering fountain
that rains down upon them
pots and jars
at the ready to catch the offering

Word travels fast
across our Island
and soon travelers arrive
into Pooktook
each eager to drink
of the water that Raz Nutok spoke

The waters of The Sacred Well being one of them.
